Chapter 13

IT TOOK ERIC FOUR hours to fall asleep. Then Kathy’s text woke him. After barely fifteen minutes of precious sleep, Eric was fuzzy-headed and his blood felt like tar throughout his system. He was so exhausted, he couldn’t shake it. Stumbling to her apartment, he tucked his gun in the waistband of his pants and pulled his sweatshirt over it. An informality he never did before.

What was there to say? His freaking heart did a stupid jump and swelled when she opened the door. She was adorable in her hoodie sweatshirt and pajama pants with big, clunky mules that a dad might choose to wear. If Kathy were a dog, her hackles would have been raised. That level of anger, a tacit don’t-touch-me was the vibe she gave off. There was nothing to do but suck it all up. Eric had to tolerate her anger and disdain towards him. All of it was deserved. He felt like hanging his head around her. But that would expose all the knots churning in his guts. He could not say the truth. She could so easily unravel him by demanding the truth. And in all honesty, Eric wanted her to know the truth.

But instead, he was cool, absent, and antisocial. That was his intent. Did she wake him up in the middle of the night just to torture him? Just so he would notice her hair, now free of any braid or ponytail, hanging down, framing her face under her hood? She rarely looked so casual and sweet, the fresh-out-of-bed femininity was a huge turn on to him.

Internally sighing, he followed behind her, stifling the urge to grab her and pull her up against him. He saw himself leaning down to kiss the side of her face and maybe nibble on her ear before letting her fall against him.

Stuffing his hands angrily into his hoodie pocket, he glared at her backside and hated himself, his job and the present circumstances. No other form of occupation would require that he follow her everywhere and stay in constant contact with her while insisting she was nothing to him. It was a special kind of torture and hell.

She obviously planned to tell Kayla about him. And what happened. What would Kayla do? How could he trust the two of them to keep quiet long enough to allow him to stay on her detail? Now, more than before, the ominous threat loomed in his mind and he adamantly refused to leave the case.

After he safely escorted her, he waited until Kayla’s bedroom light came on before slipping away to his “quarters.” Until this was over, he had to be right there, her freaking bodyguard-slash-guardian angel. He had to be available for her three o’clock flights to Kayla and one o’clock trips to lunch as well as everything in between. He was her number one guard.

She would naturally detest every moment of it. As hard as it was for Eric, he reveled in it. Was there anyone nicer to look at than Kathy? Everything she did showed innate grace, poise, and sweetness.
