LET’S TALK ABOUT IT

Why does the rabbi have the woman bring the animals into the house? At the end of the story, the woman is right back where she started, so why is she so much happier? Why does the rabbi say, “It all depends on how you look at things?”

PRACTICES

TREE ZAZEN

Trees are very patient. They just grow where they are and give back beauty, stability, and shade. Go outside to a tree in your backyard or ask a grown-up to take you to a park and find a nice tree there. Sit down on the ground with your back to the tree. See if, as you breathe, you can breathe in the patience of the tree as you sit quietly for a few minutes, supported by the tree. You can make a beautiful rubbing of tree bark. Take a crayon—or two or three—and peel off the paper wrapper. Place a piece of white paper on top of the bark and, holding the crayon on its side rather than with the tip, carefully rub the crayon back and forth until the pattern of the bark comes through. You can experiment with making a design of different colors. Gassho to thank the tree!
