The Amazing Beak

I always say that chickens peck first and ask questions later. The beak is to the chicken what hands are to humans. Chickens are curious, and they use their beaks to give them more insight into whatever object they are investigating. The chicken beak has a high concentration of sensory nerves and touch receptors. This multipurpose tool is used for gathering food (including catching prey), courting, raising young, fighting, preening, manipulating objects, and even navigation. My favorite time to see chickens use their beaks is when I give them a bowl of cooked spaghetti — it’s so funny to see two of them squabble over the same noodle while each holding onto an end of it. I also love watching a broody hen ever so gently roll an egg away from a neighboring nesting box with her trusty beak to add it to her own clutch.
