SWAINSON’S HAWK

The Swainson’s hawk once suffered from a case of mistaken identity, when an early specimen drawing was misidentified as a common buzzard. Several years later, in 1832, the mistake was found and the species was named in honor of the illustrator who had first drawn the mislabeled specimen. Swainson’s hawks are highly social and tend to be found in large groups for much of the year. Groups of soaring or migrating hawks are called kettles; Swainson’s hawks often form kettles consisting of tens of thousands of individuals during their migration from North to South America.
