This bird is losing a body feather.

IN TOP FORM

Keeping feathers new and clean is very important, as it enables eagles to catch fish while flying.

MORE FEATHER FACTS

As Bald Eagles mature, their juvenile feathers emerge in different colors. Once the their adult feathers come in, after age five, any feathers lost during molting are replaced with new ones of the same color. This means that the new head and tail feathers will be white and wing and body feathers will be brown.

An eagle has roughly 7000 feathers, which make up 5 percent of its body weight. Only one flight feather is lost at a time, so the bird can continue to fly and hunt.
