Isobel woke early, conscious of Troy still beside her. Cautiously she turned her head on the pillow and looked into his sleeping face. His blond stubble was growing, his sleep had ironed the lines from his face. He looked young and endearing. She wanted to kiss him awake, she wanted to touch his warm, slight body, but she stayed on her side of the bed, she thought he needed his sleep and that a good lover would guard his rest.
She felt sticky and tired after lovemaking, she felt a delicious sensual ease, such as she had never known before. Always before the presence of Zelda had been an obstacle to the intimacy between Troy and Isobel, as well as their only route for contact. Now Isobel was alone with Troy and she could feel her own desire for him. For the first time she knew that he had chosen her, without a shield, without mediation. Troy wanted her now, she believed. Now they were truly lovers. She smiled and gently touched his cheek still careful not to wake him. This was her lover, she thought. This was the start of a love affair. Who knew where it might take her? It could not take her far away from her devotion to Philip, nothing could excuse her from her duty to her husband. But Troy knew that. Uniquely, wonderfully, Troy knew everything and still had chosen to love her, still had chosen to bear her down to the floor, to lift her up into bed.
Beside her, Troy stirred, and opened his eyes. He encountered Isobelâs steady, loving gaze with a shock, he wondered how long she had been awake, staring into his face. He felt a powerful sense of embarrassment and a deep awareness that their relationship had become both more intimate and far more difficult.
âWide awake?â he said brightly. âAnd looking wonderful. Iâll make you a cup of tea while you have your shower. Itâs another busy day today.â
He slipped from the bed without touching her, escaping her surprised face. As he filled the kettle and switched it on he glanced back at the bed. To his relief she was getting up, pulling the quilted dressing gown around her imperfect nakedness. He blew her a kiss. âAnother day, another dollar,â he said cheerfully. âIâll nip across to my room and shower.â
