Chapter Twenty-Five

Monday, December 2nd, 2052, 05:59 OWO Server Time

“You’re up.”

Blinking sleep from my eyes. It took me a second to mentally adjust to returning from my visit with Lucas. After he’d knocked my ass to the gym floor, we’d gone for a bite to eat in the school’s dining hall for pizza. The food had generally been one of the best parts of OVR World Online compared to my life before, but the food at Lucas’s school put everything else I’d had to shame. Of course, anything seemed better compared to the cold rations I’d gnawed on for dinner. While we ate, Lucas and I chatted on lighter subjects while I covertly gawked at the familiar faces that the Doctor had lifted from shows and films and even got occasionally stumped.

As I became more aware of myself, I was mildly surprised to find myself sandwiched between Archer at my back and Bryn snuggled my front. Macha, whose handle now displayed as Amara_the Fist_2033, was squatting over my head, gently shaking my shoulder. I instantly decided I’d continue to refer to her as Macha, at least in my head and in private. Archer had awoken as well, and with a grunt, the wolf heaved himself upright and padded away from me.

Seeing I was awake, Macha stepped away, and I rolled back from Bryn, who shifted and curled into a tighter ball at the loss of my body heat. Quiet as possible, I extricated myself from my bedroll and struggled to my feet. Once I was standing, I tried to shake out my stiff aching muscles.

“Fuck, it’s cold,” I hissed as my breath plumed out from my lips.

Drawing my bow to have it ready, I glanced over to find Macha squatting on her haunches under her own cloak. I’d expected to find her already deep in her own bedroll, but she was staring intently at me.

“You gonna get some sleep?” I asked.

“Hell yeah, but we need to talk.” Her voice was hushed but adamant.

“Alright.” I padded over and squatted down beside her.

“When we get to Corvin, you either need to tell Bryn and Elias everything, or they’ll need to leave the party.”

“Are you serious?” Despite having already bitten the bullet and laid everything out for Bolton and Macha, the thought of bringing more people into the circle of my secret gave me an immediate surge of anxiety.

“I’ve already discussed it with Bolton. If you don’t tell them, we will.”

“That’s not fair!” I kept my voice low, but I felt a surge of indignance at the ultimatum.

“It’s not fair to them,” Macha said. “They’ll be putting a lot on the line to stay with us, and they deserve the truth. They earned that much in Faversham.”

Swallowing hard on my feelings, I tried hard to look at things from Macha’s side of things. Finally, my gaze drifted to Bryn, who hadn’t stirred further since I got up. “Think I can trust them?”

“If you can’t…” Macha shrugged and stood from her squat. “…then they shouldn’t be coming with us anyways.
