23: Levi

BLACK CHROME BADGES glint with OCC Noctus Ops on the chests of the soldiers in black who carry my limp body away from Marci. I can’t fight any longer. Men in white coats pass but don’t acknowledge how they hit and electrocute me with their batons.

Marci has disappeared into a distant room. She thinks I don’t want this, yet it feels normal. I expected nothing less.

My feet drag across the floor as the guards haul me along the stretch of rooms. We pass several occupied quarters before we enter an empty one. With the top half of every room made of glass on three sides, it’s not hard to see in. They sling my flaccid body onto a flat exam bench in the middle. The pins and needles erupt with more force.

I cry out and gasp. My back arches from the miserable signals, and I notice a small metal bed. A toilet. A large screen on the solid back wall. Dark rings in the ceiling above me.

The door whooshes shut, leaving me in silence.

Pain has me struggling through each breath. Hundreds of breaths pass before the door opens again. A nurse in a light gray coat appears at my side.

“Sit up.”

“C—” My mouth is too dry, my tongue swollen. I swallow. “Can’t.”

She lifts her arms with mechanical precision and helps me up. She circles me slowly, making notes on a tablet in her hand. I want to ask where Marci is. I want to tell her I chose to play dumb rather than make a scene. I could’ve killed many. But I need to be here. Shane is supposed to fix me. This is how I find out if he’s a liar.

I haven’t seen him in this part of the building, but I’ve caught his scent through the halls. If he is a friend of Marci’s and on our side, he’ll find me. If he isn’t, I’ll kill him for getting Marci into this. From my short time with Marci, I’ve learned loyalty to each other can change everything. It’s been a long time since I felt like I belonged anywhere.

The nurse writes something on her screen.

There’s a force pulling me apart inside. I want to run to Marci’s side but can’t. I don’t speak. I give them what they need as my pain ratchets up, evoking a grimace I can’t fight. Her screen beeps in frantic patterns that make my heart thump faster.

She looks up at me, then hurries out of the room.

A guard enters minutes later, a gun tight in a hand. Leather squeaks over the rubber grip. He’s dark-haired with a jutting jaw and blunt nose, which has clearly broken many times. There’s nowhere to hide. My only chance to survive if he attacks is to return the favor. I stand from the bench, but it’s agonizing movement. We stare at one another for a breath before he lifts the gun.

I charge on instinct. He hits me three times. The bullets sting like acid burns. They don’t tear my flesh.
