“How long have we been sitting?”

Pete consulted the clock in the wheelhouse, knowing it was going to be bad news before he looked. “All of twelve minutes,” he said.

Nan’s expression said more than words ever could.

“Hey, at least we’re not under attack,” Ollie said.

“Your plan seems to be working so far,” Nan said. “I have to give you credit for that.”

“It’s my gift and my curse.”

“What is?”

“My understanding of, or perhaps I should say my relationship with, Z-Shark.”

Nan was trying to get a read on this strange young man. One thing she knew—she had been at sea too long. In a weird way, he was starting to seem attractive. Spontaneous decisions sometimes had to be made. “Ollie, would you like to take a tour of the Gannet? It’s not much, but I’m thinking you might enjoy seeing my cabin. It can give you a feel of what life is like on the open seas.”

Ollie had his thoughts spread in too many directions to catch the finer nuances of what was happening. “I guess we’ve still got a little time to kill.”

She took him by the arm and led the way, maneuvering around the crew and rescued divers as she did. “It might be a little cramped. I hope you don’t mind close quarters.”

“No problem. I appreciate your hospitality.”

She smiled a wide smile. “I’m sure you will.” They reached the doorway that led inside. “Watch your head. It’s a little bit tight.”

Ollie ducked and entered.

“And…here is the door to my cabin.” Nan opened it and waited for Ollie to walk in.

He looked around. It was both plain and small. Of course, he would be too polite to say anything along those lines. “It’s very nice. Quaint, I guess I would say.”

“Thank you.” She made a gesture towards the bunk. “Sorry, no room for extra chairs. Here, have a seat on the bed.”

Ollie sat with enough indifference that Nan knew he had no idea what was coming next. After he sat, she walked over close, looming over him.

“Ollie, I wonder if you can help me with something.”

Ollie raised his eyebrows. “Sure. I’d be glad to.”

In a deft move, she lifted off her shirt. She tossed it on the floor.

Ollie looked both surprised and slightly panicked. “Oh, I…”

Her bra joined the shirt on the floor.

“Hey…” Ollie looked like he would bolt if the opportunity was there. As it was, Nan had him trapped.

“Ollie, could you help me with something?”

Ollie couldn’t even talk.

Nan picked up his right hand (which was quite limp and unresponsive) and placed it against her. “Can you tell me if this feels okay?”

Ollie still couldn’t speak. He did a perfunctory squeeze and let his hand fall. “I’m not a medical professional.”

His lack of response was disappointing. She repositioned his hand. “What about here?”

The exploration took longer this time.

“No problems I can see.” He was breathing a little heavier.

Nan felt it was time to seal the deal. They didn’t have all day, after all. “I’m sorry to impose, but there’s one more thing.
