Chapter Eighteen

With Bubbles in one hand and the globe in the other, I couldn’t draw my revolver. I tossed the Void Prism to Dirk and then drew my gun, thumbing the barrel to the red-light setting as I took aim. When I fired, the staccato thump sounded much different from the crackling stun charges I had fired before. These were explosive rounds, and they streaked toward their target like miniature phosphorescent missiles. They struck the top of the tunnel in a flash of concussive force so deep I felt it in my chest. My ears popped and we were all blown back a step as rock and debris rained down on the Unicorns unfortunate enough to be standing in the rearward tunnels.

I paused a moment and stared at my gun.

“Do not fire that weapon inside the mine.” Buttercup shouted in my head. “You could bring the entire complex down on top of you, not to mention hundreds of innocent slave miners.”

“Now you tell me.” I thumbed the cylinder off the explosive-round setting and the lights on the revolver changed momentarily from red to orange before reverting back to the default blue. Buttercup had told me what all the settings and colors meant, but other than the exploding one, I couldn’t remember what they were. I hoped this orange setting wouldn’t kill us all.

Dirk crouched to pick up the globe from the ground. Either he had missed my toss or dropped it in the explosion. When he didn’t dive for cover, I assumed the casing hadn’t ruptured and we were okay.

“That cave-in isn’t going to hold them for long.” I nodded everyone toward the large exit cavity that led to the surface. “We need to get out of—”

More of the deadly red energy bolts shattered rock above our heads, interrupting before I could finish, as four more Unicorns rounded the corner from another shaft.

I raised my revolver and blasted off two rounds. I didn’t have time to aim but I hoped my return fire would at least slow them down. As it turned out, aiming was not a prerequisite for this setting. The thump, hiss was similar to the sound of the explosive round, but not as concussive. When I saw the shells curve and track their targets, I all but tripped over my own feet.

The heat seeking projectiles struck two of the Unicorns square in the chest, dropping them before they could take another step and forced the other two into cover.

Lois, Dirk and Elliot were already running, and I paused long enough to let Twitch scurry up to my shoulder before I turned to stay dead on their heels. The Unicorns were not a race of cowards. They would be after us no matter what I threw at them. Best that we stayed ahead of them while we could.

“Buttercup,” I sprinted forward keeping Bubbles tucked close to my body as I clutched the revolver in my other hand. I didn’t have time to put her in my pack so she would have to ride this one out NFL style.
