CHAPTER 5

The Health Charge

The groundwork for all happiness is good health.

—LEIGH HUNT

If you’ve gotten this far, you’ve seen that to live Fully Charged, you have to get out there and, well, live—actively participate in life and do things that spark happiness and generate positive energy. And to do anything beyond the bare minimum, beyond the things you already do, it requires a certain degree of raw, physical energy and endurance, plus mental and emotional stamina. That’s what the Health Charge delivers.

Think of it this way: All the other charges can give you the energy you need to believe you can run a 5K or even a marathon. They can motivate you to put together a training schedule and feel pumped and ready to start running. They can even give tired legs a boost mid-run. But what I’ve learned through both my own experiences and as a certified personal trainer, is that the other charges alone won’t get you across the finish line. You need physical health and endurance to actually carry you the distance.

Living a Fully Charged Life is a lot like an endurance event, and physical activity and quality sleep literally give you energy—the energy needed to participate and win.

What’s so cool is that along with physical energy, the Health Charge produces a powerful mental and emotional charge. Exercise and sleep both slay stress, giving you extra patience and headspace to deal with the roadblocks and detours of life. They balance your mood and flood your brain with feel-good chemicals that help you enjoy and appreciate the scenery along the way. And this combo of physical, mental and emotional energy makes you unstoppable.

I couldn’t do half of what I do in a day if I didn’t work out regularly and log around seven hours of sleep a night. I might be able to give work my all, but I’d have little left for my family, friends, sanity, side projects and everything else that creates a life I love. Or I could give my family all my (limited) energy, but at work I’d be dragging my butt from meeting to meeting (or snoozing through my teleconferences) and dropping balls and turning down opportunities left and right. Heck, I probably wouldn’t even have the option to turn down anything because I would have missed whatever event, meeting or extracurricular that opened the door or inspired me in the first place.

I refuse to make those trade-offs. Decide now to prioritize your health and you won’t have to make them either. Because the alternative—choosing to be sedentary, treating sleep like it’s optional—means choosing to put limits on your energy, happiness and life. It may not seem like that’s what you’re doing, but your choices will catch up to you. And the longer you wait, the fewer choices and the less potential for energy you have.

So much of our energy and mental state depends on our physical health, and what you do now can set off a chain reaction that either creates complications or opens you to opportunities.
