Your hairs grow through a pore so small,
you’d hardly know it’s there at all.
There’s also oil inside that pore—
a tiny bit, and not much more.
But sometimes glands make oil at such
a fast pace that there’s way too much.
Then pores can clog beneath the skin,
and whitehead pimples form within.
Now, blackheads form when there is more
than extra oil stuck in a pore.
’Cause sometimes oil can form a goo,
and germs can get stuck in there too.
Plus dead skin cells will mix inside,
and push the pore to open wide.
The goop is now exposed to air,
which breaks down cells and oils in there.
Those dead cells contain melanin,
which mixes with the oils and then
creates that tiny, dark brown spot.
(You’ll think it’s dirt, but it is not.)
Now when kids start to reach their teens,
they make more hormones —and this means
their oil glands get revved up too,
and soon those pimply bumps show through.
Your oil glands work hardest in
your nose, your forehead, and your chin.
And washing may not be enough
to keep off all the oily stuff.
But as your hormones settle down,
far fewer pimples come around.
And know it isn’t only you;
most other kids have pimples too!
