As the train drew into the station and she climbed on board, she began to think about the problem of putting this plan into action. How, exactly, would she get there? She knew Greenham was somewhere near Newbury, and that was it. And once there, what would she do? She was not sure how to find Mel, or even if Mel would welcome her with open arms, given that she was so taken up with Jude. She had a mental image of herself standing there forlornly with her backpack, alone in an Army searchlight. Besides, dashing off to join the peace women would not go down well with Pilar. She had been a little cool since the Richard-crime, though she had insisted this was all in Nettaâs imagination. And she had been scathing about her day trip with Mel and Jude, insisting that she didnât want to hear anything about Jude at all. Then Netta had another idea, though a rather challenging one. She wouldnât go to Greenham on her own. Somehow, she would persuade Pilar to go with her.
How she was going to do this she wasnât absolutely sure. But perhaps the thought of seeing Mel again might be some inducement. In spite of her studiedly offhand attitude, Netta knew that she was missing her old flatmate. Her hit-rate with women was high â she was currently seeing Miffy, the wild Welsh girl, and seemed unusually smitten. But this didnât take up all her time â or her emotion. Netta had found a half-written note on the living-room table, scrawled while Pilar was downing a bottle of wine, judging from the empty bottle of Bulgarian red left on top of the crumpled pages. Pilar had started by enquiring calmly about life at the base, but ended up in a ranting lament, accusing Melanie of everything from faking her sexual orientation to stealing cheese. By the time Netta had finished reading, she realized that sheâd committed another crime: invading Pilarâs privacy. By bringing the two of them together, Netta felt that she could help them repair their friendship. She couldnât see quite how she would do this, but she could try. Having met Jude, she didnât think she was much of a substitute for Pilar.
As she reached Dartmouth Villa, she heard footsteps hurrying along behind her. âBloody freezing, isnât it?â said a familiar voice. âNot exactly what I would call le temps du choix.â She turned and saw Emily, hand-in-hand with Bryan. She was all smiles now the vortex of waiting was over. In spite of the intense cold, she was coatless, wearing a clingy black sweater which accentuated her large bosoms.
âYou look very serious,â said Bryan, who looked very serious himself.
âIâve decided to go to Greenham,â said Netta, then wished she hadnât.
This seemed to cheer Bryan up. âWhat for?â he asked. âWhat would a fun-loving, woman-person-about-town like you be doing, hanging out with a bunch of hideous lesbian girls?â
Netta glared at him. âSaving the planet? Pulling humanity back from
