Wait, you’re not Aaron?

We wrapped up a full day of our women-let’s-do-this! conference. You know the kind. A bunch of women work their asses off to plan and execute their own women’s conference. If I’m brutally honest, I think they’re kinda bullshit. In many of them we spend way too much time talking about the problems and not enough time talking about the solutions. Not to mention, the format is often stuffy, the food barely gets touched, and there’s never enough laughter. Or wine.

I admit though, I used to be part of these. Now I’m focused (alongside my podcast co-host) on reinventing women’s conferences. If you ever come to one of ours, hold on to your hat. Think less pontificating and more dancing. Less lecture and more conjecture. Less confining and much more wining.

But a few years back, I was the co-chair of our enterprise’s women’s group, specifically focused on advancing women into the executive ranks. We held a one-day conference. Gina Davis spoke and was amazing. The rest was ... well ... typical.

The very next day (hold on to this detail, the irony is off the charts), I drove up to Massachusetts for a town hall meeting that my boss’ boss was hosting. I had been asked to do a round-robin section, which essentially meant that I had no more than two minutes to talk about something.

When I got to the office, I went to check in with the in-house TV guys (yes, we had our own studio) to see what the drill was for the meeting. It’s important to note that these are guys I had worked with on several occasions. They knew who I was.

Note: The names I use here are not their real names so as to keep it confidential (and save others from potential embarrassment.)

I popped into the makeshift audiovisual room and asked Dude, “What’s the plan? Anything I should be aware of before we go live?”

Dude looked at me and said, “You’re not talking today.”

Like two siblings arguing, we went on …

“Yes, I am.”

“No, you’re not.”

I asked Dude to pull up the PowerPoint for evidence. I said, “Scroll down. See, I’m doing the round-robin.”

Dude looked at me and said, “No, you’re not. This morning I talked to Guy and he said that Aaron and Buddy were doing that section.”

I looked at him and said, “I am Erin . You know that, Dude.”

“Oooooh, I assumed he meant male Aaron.”

Sometimes you get lucky enough to have ridiculously great stories just land in your lap.
