Respiratory fitness and VO2 max

I have a theory that some of the yoga breathing techniques developed in the high Himalaya where the air is thin. For thousands of years, Indian yogis have made pilgrimage journeys to the higher regions, many of them travelling annually or spending winters in the high-altitude hermitages. Perhaps the techniques developed as a kind of preparation or acclimatisation process, and then it turned out that they brought long life and fantastic health and strength.

The strength and stroke volume of the heart is a major contributor to fitness, and endurance athletes have been known to have massively hypertrophied hearts and low resting heart rates because of the power of the pump, but respiratory muscle fatigue is an important limiting factor in endurance sports. It is not only the legs and arms that need endurance and strength; the air-intake mechanism is also moved by muscles.
