Using sensory feedback methods to cultivate a sense of safety

Another factor that makes sensory feedback methods powerful is that students can use the techniques on their own bodies, which empowers them to manage their pain without relying on their massage therapist or teacher. Furthermore, for students with pain, the yoga studio can create a safe container for practicing these techniques away from the distractions and stressors that they might experience at home or in a gym. From a psychological perspective, learning these techniques in a group environment can also feel less isolating than practicing them at home, because students can see that everyone benefits from these techniques and that they are taught as a form of wellness, rather than therapy for an ailment. Practicing in a group environment also reduces feelings of anxiety around “doing it wrong,” because the teacher is the guide.

For students who don’t have physical pain, but struggle with anxiety or attention deficit disorder and find traditional forms of meditation difficult, sensory feedback methods can be a way to meditate without having to be still for long periods. Having a task to focus on and sensations to draw their attention to in a calming environment can create the experience of mindfulness without the requirement of being still in a specific pose or position. Similarly, many students struggle with observing their breath during traditional yoga and meditation practices because they are distracted by trying to position their bodies in the correct alignment. Sensory feedback methods can make it easier to learn a new or more easeful breathing pattern, because students are lying on the floor in a relaxed state. While they might also experience this during Savasana, they are usually checked out and tired by the end of class. Since sensory feedback methods can be introduced early in the class, this allows us to teach breath work when our students are more tuned in to what they are doing and how they feel. Finally, for people who don’t feel safe being touched, sensory feedback methods can allow them to experience the benefits of touch and massage while maintaining their sense of control.
