Each section of the spine has a certain number of vertebrae—cervical (7), thoracic (12), lumbar (5), sacral (5 fused), coccygeal (4 fused)—but anyone can have one more or less (Figure 9.3). When identifying a particular vertebra, we give it the letter from the name of the section and a number counting from the top. So, the top cervical vertebra is C1 and the last C7. If talking about a particular part of the spine where movement is taking place, the two adjacent vertebrae are referenced, as in T12/L1, the bottom thoracic and top lumbar vertebra.
