Evie wasn’t sure what had come over Sterling. For all she knew, it was the way he acted when he was hot on the trail of his prey. But his jokes had a strain to them that afternoon, and they’d fallen completely silent once dusk fell—by agreement, but even so. It wasn’t their usual silence. There was no comfort in it, no understanding.

But again, perhaps the tension was because of the situation.

And perhaps his clear irritation now, as the car bounced over the rutted lane to the inn, its headlights cutting a weak swath through heavy darkness, was because the sudden, steady rain had called a halt to their stakeout after midnight. There’d been no point in staying out there in it. Wherever he was, Meyer would have hunkered down in an attempt to stay dry, not gone groping in the inky darkness for a pack of matches already doused in water.

Perhaps it was only that, all of that. But it didn’t feel like it. It felt like the sand had shifted under their feet, and she wasn’t sure why.

But she knew beyond any doubt that it was about to get worse when the headlights caught on a white uniform on her porch. She parked, killed the lights and the engine, and wondered if she dared to pray that Herb was waiting for her because he and the boys had been goofing around and someone had gotten a gash and needed her to fetch Uncle Garret here, quietly and off the record.

The manila folder in his hands told a different tale, one that made her heart sink into her stomach when she glanced over at Sterling. His jaw was clenched so tightly that a muscle ticked there, and she didn’t think it was because he was in any physical pain this time.

Which was all sorts of unfair. Packets like this had always made her come to attention, made her smile, made her feel alive. She’d never dreaded one before, and why should she now, just because Sterling Bertram was here watching?

Because if he asked, she couldn’t tell him. Not this. This was the one thing she couldn’t be honest about. And that secret could well ruin the friendship that had blossomed between them.

A thought that shouldn’t pierce so deeply, should it? She’d only known him for a month, and he’d been unconscious for much of the first week. But once he’d awakened . . .

Well, there was nothing for it. She pasted a waterlogged smile onto her face and marched to the steps.

Herb took in her rain-soaked form, her backpack, and her companion with a mute glance. He wouldn’t ask what she’d been doing out there with a male stranger, but she could see the questions in his eyes.

He put on a good show, though. Easy smile, quiet words. “Hey, Evie. Sorry to come by so late—just got off my shift. I thought I’d slip this under the door for you, but your car was gone, and I was worried. ’Fraid you were stuck somewhere, what with the rain.
