Chapter Fifteen

Michaela’s hands trembled with anger. She fought to keep the tears of disappointment at bay, and her voice from cracking when confronting Matt. Earlier, she’d been ready to take the leap and believe his story. He’d sounded so convincing and so sincere all this time. Everything about him was attractive to her, other than the fact that he’d concocted this crazy time travel story. That kiss they’d shared had been nothing short of mind-blowing. Jamie’s phone call had changed everything.

That’s what you get for stepping outside the lines, Michaela.

She stiffened when Matt followed her into the house and advanced on her. Her teeth hurt from grinding them. His eyes locked on hers and wouldn’t let go, yet there was nothing threatening in the way he approached her. Her heart sped up regardless. Even now, after what she’d learned, why was it so easy to want to trust him?

“Why the anger, Kayla? What have I done?” he asked. He reached for her arm. His grip was strong yet gentle, and he took another step closer. “A few minutes ago you kissed me.”

Michaela’s throat constricted. She swallowed several times and met his soft stare. The sultry tone of his voice teased her mind and heart.

“Maybe that was a mistake.” Her voice cracked. She broke eye contact and studied her bare feet. She hadn’t even put shoes on yet today. So much had happened in the short span since getting out of bed this morning. She nearly laughed out loud. For days, she’d postponed trying to get to the real story. She’d avoided it because she desperately wanted to believe him. Matt wasn’t a bad guy.

She’d never felt as alive as she’d been in Matt’s arms, and his kiss had left her light-headed and giddy – until the phone rang. Even now, with him standing so close, she yearned for his arms around her. She was falling faster than if someone had tied lead weights to her legs and tossed her off a mountain. She was about to hit the ground and shatter into a million broken pieces.

She’d never bought into love at first sight before, rolling her eyes whenever one of her friends would declare herself hopelessly in love with a guy she’d just met. Maybe she’d simply been too cautious all her life to allow it to happen to her. Why had she let her guard down with someone like Matt? He was like a magnet, from the moment she’d first met him, and the attraction kept growing stronger, as if some invisible force pushed them together.

He felt it as much as she did, but he’d been able to keep his emotions in check and been much more disciplined about it, while she’d all but thrown herself at him earlier. Jamie’s phone call, and all she’d learned from her former supervisor in California, should have been enough to call the police immediately after she ended the call.

Michaela shook her head. Why hadn’t she done it? There was a kidnapped baby
