Chapter 23
Gracie
Day 3
Sunday, October 30
Twenty minutes later, just past midnight, the sergeant took his last breath. Gracie covered him with one of the many sheets Sheila had brought from housekeeping for their use. Gracie had only met the sergeant the one time on the day of the EMP, but it was still difficult for her. When the next person she moved to comfort died within minutes, she decided she needed a break.
Even though it was still the middle of the night, the lobby was buzzing with activity. The news of the fire had traveled throughout the building, and many from the upper levels made their way downstairs, allowing Hogan to commandeer people to fit his needs. Jane, who had gone to bed hours earlier, had reappeared and was helping with the injured. Even Sandra Petersen was being cordial as she, with her husband by her side, stood guard at the parking lot doors along with two others.
At some point, Sandra had found new clothes. She was now wearing a purple velour tracksuit straight out of the â80s, along with gym shoes. Gracie hated to admit the woman looked great in the leisure wear and considerably more comfortable than she had been in her pointed-toe heels.
Velasquez was being briefed by the ER nurse who was managing the injured. The nurse responded with a shrug before promptly walking away. âThatâs it? Youâre just going to leave?â Velasquez called after him.
He lifted a hand in acknowledgement, but didnât stop walking until he reached the front door. The guard hesitated to let the nurse out, but opened the door when Velasquez yelled, âFine. Just go then.â The nurse slipped away into the night.
Was he going back to the fire to see if there were additional injuries? From the interaction with Velasquez, Gracie didnât think so. She glanced back toward Velasquez, whoâd dropped her chin to her chest as she rubbed the back of her neck. Gracie took a step in Velasquezâs direction, but her attention was caught by a commotion at the parking lot door.
âSomeoneâs here!â a guard called out.
âAre they trying to break in again?â Sandra Petersen cried.
âSomeoneâs at this door, too!â a man called from the nearest side door.
âHere too!â came from someone at the other side door.
Gracieâs heart hammered as Chet, suddenly at her side, grabbed her arm. âLetâs get you out of here.â
She pulled her arm away. âIâm fine here. Go help.â
âArm yourself.â Chet motioned to one of the mop handles turned spears heâd carried on his earlier salvaging trip.
Gracie reached for the spear propped against the wall while Jane grabbed an almost empty bottle of Grey Goose. The two older women and several others stationed themselves by the door area of the bar. If the attackers got inside, theyâd do what they could to prevent them from reaching the injured police officers and civilians in the makeshift medical ward.
âTheyâre at the front door!â
Gracie tightened her grip on the spear. She glanced around, seeing the fear and determination etched on the faces of the surrounding people.
