I shrugged. “Simon still holds a bit of a grudge from when Walela embarrassed him in front of us. I figure this should make him feel a bit more favorably toward us. And if he gets himself killed trying to shoot that crappy thing he was carrying, we’d be down one person. Worst-case scenario, we lose a rifle.” Looking directly at her, daring her to challenge me over risking the rifle, I finished with, “Better than losing a person.”

But Kenni just grunted. “You’re turning into quite the diplomat, aren’t you?”

“Between Mr. Roesch and you, how could I help it?”

From ahead, Walela called, “Come on, you two. We need to get going.”
