Don Quixote

An oddly popular name for a boat, probably because the character has become somewhat divorced from Miguel de Cervantes’s Spanish classic published between 1605 and 1615. Don Quixote has turned into a romantic hero, driven to fighting injustice and seeking it out wherever he goes.

That’s not really what Cervantes’s novel is about, however, which suggests that most of the skippers who choose Don Quixote for their boat thinking it evokes an idea of chivalric romance haven’t actually got all the way through the book. Haplessly naïve nobleman Alonso Quixano adopts the Don Quixote persona because he has read too many adventure stories and has delusions about being a similar kind of hero. He is oblivious of reality, lives in a fantasy world of his own making, and leaps in (as fools are wont to do) without thinking about the consequences.

Don’t be like Alonso Quixano, and don’t name your boat Don Quixote.
