Chapter Twelve

Xander

Home and straight to bed alone seemed like a good idea at the time. Last night.

This morning after spending said night tossing and turning, after not even a kiss goodnight, I can say without a doubt that it was a stupid idea.

Sundays at the clubhouse are usually spent with Rowdy and Jett arguing football, Jude and Daisy cooking on the grill. Rollie usually shows up. Occasionally Chloe. And the rest of us. But today is Henley’s first birthday, and the celebration is set to be a big one to make up for her daddy not being there.

I didn’t ask Rylee to go along. I didn’t have to. Daisy and Rebel handled it for me. It was just a kid’s birthday party. Didn’t mean more than it had to, but Rylee came out of the bedroom in a sundress that hugged all the right places, enhanced in a way that made my mouth water. With her hair tied back she could’ve been a model in a magazine. Her makeup made it look like she wasn’t wearing any–or maybe she wasn’t–and by God, she was so beautiful my dick stood up to say hello.

When she brushes past me, I pull her into an embrace, her body against mine, her lips so close I can smell the scent of her berry lip gloss.

“Is this us taking a minute?” She pushes lightly against my chest, and I let her go.

“That was me who suggested a minute?” When she nods, I shake my head. “Fuck. What was I thinking?” Right now, all I can think is how much I want her. “I must be an idiot.”

“Hmm.” Instead of elaborating or outright agreeing, she tilts her head down and breathes in a long, deep inhale, then looks up again. “What time does the party start?”

“Couple hours. Why?”

She nods and brushes past me, careful not to touch, and walks to the kitchen. Intrigued and probably on a course set to follow her around like a lost puppy for the day, I end up beside her at the kitchen island.

She opens a couple of cabinets, and in only a few seconds, she has a counter full of ingredients. “What are you doing?”

“I have one kitchen skill.” She smiles. “And I’m walking into a potentially hostile environment.”

“There won’t be hostility. I promise.” She’s important to me. That’s enough to make sure everyone is friendly.

Her nod is short and almost silent except for the sigh. “Well, either way, I don’t want to arrive without a gift.”

“I ordered Henley’s present online.”

I stand in the doorway, watching her roll out dough and spread flour with a cool little flick of her wrist. And she hums. I don’t recognize the tune, but it’s the picture of domesticity I once thought would have her sister in it, but this feels right, too.

This is a perfect fucking moment in a house that, until she came here, didn’t have enough perfect moments.

I want to go to her, pull her against me and claim her as mine, but I stand in the doorway instead.
