"Okay, I’ve got you,” Harper said as she took the weight of Amos’ right arm on top of her shoulder. He certainly was heavy. “James, you get underneath the other side and we’ll see how many steps we can go.”
Amos put his good leg out in front and leaned into Harper. She exhaled as he pushed down onto her shoulders.
“It really hurts,” Amos yelped.
“I know,” Harper huffed under the weight. “But we’ve got to get you off the beach.”
Ben noticed their struggle and had brought Sam over to help. The four of them completed the journey and placed Amos in the shade. Shermeen, Zoey and Lynne were gone now. The young girl was sat by herself under the shade of a tree while Zoey was a few metres off digging a hole in the sand. Lynne’s body lay under a cloth next to her while she worked.
“If you want to get off the beach,” Amos cleared his throat again. “Just leave me here if you need to.”
“We’re not doing that,” Harper chimed in. She noticed Zack silently rolling his eyes. “We’re going to have to find some sort of stretcher,” she continued. “Sam, you’ve been looking at what we have left. Anything flat enough to do the job?”
“Some of the plating from the ship might have survived the attack,” he said. “I’ll do what I can.”
“Thank you,” Harper said. “Ben, are you alright looking after these two?”
“Yeah, no problem.”
“James,” she announced as she turned to him. “Let’s take a walk.”
A few moments later, the pair had arrived at their rock. Harper sat down, aware that this would probably be the last time she’d be able to. As the sun was still high in the sky, she could see the rest of the camp in case of another attack. James landed next to her.
“Look, before we make a move, you need to tell me what you know,” said Harper.
“What about?”
“Just before we saw that flare in the sky, you said you thought you knew who those… things were. Something about their descendants?”
“Yeah,” James replied, scratching the back of his head. “I did say that. I’m not so sure after your close encounter in the jungle.”
“Just tell me what you know,” Harper said, with as much encouragement as she could muster. “I’m sure you have a good idea what you’re talking about.”
“Well, for a start, I’m pretty sure I know what the writing is.”
James pulled out the notebook from his pocket. The annotations were extensive. Pages and pages of scribbles.
“You’ve been pretty thorough.”
“Yeah, well you have to be when you’re trying to pluck something from your brain that’s been under the surface for years,” James replied. “Do you want me to go through all of this?”
Harper raised an eyebrow.
“I guess not,” James said as he tucked his papers back into the small book. “So the writing itself, I am confident it closely resembles a glyph system called Rongorongo.”
“What’s that?”
“It was discovered on Easter Island about three hundred years ago. It took a long time for me to notice the similarities.
