A whisper of magic flowed through the bus, and the door creaked shut behind me.

Though I didn’t yet sense anyone inside but the goblin, I spun toward the open aisle, raising my hammer and blurting, “Hygorotho .”

Light flashed as the tip of a magical sword thrust against the barrier that Sorka had erected even before I voiced the word. The face of the pointy-eared man—assassin —with blue-tinted skin came into view as I sensed his aura for the first time. An elf with… troll blood?

He bared his teeth as his attack was deflected but summoned power and used it to rail at my protection as he slashed again.

Letting myself rely on Sorka’s barrier, hopefully not unwisely, I resisted the urge to parry and instead swung my hammer in under his sword. The narrowness of the aisle, with high-backed seats crowding me on either side, made it hard to use the weapon. Worse, he had lightning-fast reflexes. He finished his attack and sprang back before my hammer came close to catching him.

Growling, I stalked down the aisle after him, hoping to corner him in the back. His hand dipped into a pocket, and he withdrew a magical sphere. A grenade?

I willed more power into my barrier as I swung, attempting to knock the sphere away before he could hurl it at me. Though I managed to disrupt his throw, the assassin whipped his hand back too quickly, and I didn’t succeed in striking it from his grip.

A vision of the bus exploding flashed in my mind. That was not how I wanted to clear the driveway.

Using his sword to block me, the assassin turned sideways and drew his other arm back, the grenade in his grip.

I swung over the seats toward his chest, but he parried easily. He smirked, the bastard, as if he knew he had this under control.

The hammer clipped a seat back as I retracted it. My height was not my friend in this situation.

Taking advantage, the assassin lunged up the aisle toward me with daunting speed. Only the barrier saved me from being cut.

My elbow struck a seat, and I snarled. Though I launched another attack, one he easily avoided, I glanced back toward the door. Outside, I would have more room to maneuver, but would he follow me out? And, if so, would he blow up the bus anyway?

Before I’d decided to spring for the exit, the glass of the emergency door in the back shattered inward.

Eyebrows flying up, the assassin glanced behind him. This time, I took advantage, rushing in and jabbing him in the stomach with my hammer.

It clanked against armor he wore under his shirt, but my frustrated blow landed hard enough to knock him back, almost into the arms of the person who sprang through the broken window, knocking glass everywhere.

Sarrlevi.

Clothing torn, grime matting his short blond hair, and his face utterly savage, he roared as he sprang on the assassin.

I scooted away, certain they would end up bowling me over, but Sarrlevi attacked so rapidly that even the agile half-elf didn’t have a chance.
