CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
It was a long, tense drive back to Deniseâs house. Silent, except for the chatter of bodyguards in Jonâs ear. Beside him, Grant kept his mouth shutâa necessity considering Denise rode in the backseatâbut his opinions were clear in his expression.
Marcus, Ian, and Hughes, riding in the car behind, didnât have to keep quiet.
It had started with Marcusâs âWhat the heck was that? Are you two dating?â
Of course Jon couldnât defend himself because of Deniseâs presence.
And because he had no defense. He shouldnât have sat with her. He shouldnât have opened up so much to her.
And he definitely shouldnât have gotten so close to her in the bar, suspicious character at the door or not. But heâd needed to get her someplace where nobody could see her.
What he hadnât needed to do was stand with her, face-to-face. So close.
He hadnât needed to fantasize about kissing her as if they had been on a date.
He was glad he couldnât respond to their comments, which started lighthearted but didnât stay that way. Jon was the boss, and the guys werenât stupid. They didnât make accusations aloud, but he knew the questions they werenât asking.
Was there more between Jon and Denise than there ought to be between a guard and a client? Since the answer to that seemed obvious, the real question was how much more?
When they arrived at the house, Marcus, Ian, and Grant spread around the premises. They would be on duty for a few more hours.
Hughes and Jon delivered Denise to the front door. She turned once she was inside, as if expecting him to follow.
Without a word, he pulled the door closed, trying not to see the hurt in her expression.
He figured the news of what happened had already spread to the rest of his team. When he stepped into the guest house, the looks on the faces staring at him confirmed his guess.
The guys were spread out on the floor or seated at the table. Some were smiling as if it were all a big joke, but others clearly took it more seriously.
Jon had expected that.
But Lake had been staying at the Cotes house, even when she was off-duty. When she stepped forward, he knew things were about to get interesting. She said, âUpstairs.â
âFine.â Jon marched through the room and climbed the stairs to the second-floor bedroom. One guy was reclining on his air mattress, reading.
Jon said, âGive us the room.â
âOh. Sure.â He scrambled up and past them and jogged down the stairs.
Jon closed the door and lifted his hand. âI know.â
âDo you?â
âIt was just dinner. She asked me to join her because she didnât want to sit alone.â
âAccording to the team, it was more than just dinner.â
âI never took my eyes off the ball.â
She leaned against the wall and crossed her arms. Lake wasnât like other women, never had been. Not just because of her heightâshe was nearly six feet tall. And not just because of her looks. He was her cousin, but he could admit she was drop-dead gorgeous, despite the severe bun and lack of makeup.
