He took to using an electronic muscle stimulation machine, which emitted volts of electricity resulting in muscle contractions of varying levels of intensity. This allowed his muscles to be exercised while he was reading a script, a book, or conducting business over the phone. The wires that came out of the machine were attached to small pads of various sizes that were affixed to the muscles he wished to exercise. âHe used electrostimulation with little pads that would contract the muscles â for power,â Bolo Yeung recalled. âHeâd put the pads on his upper and lower back, heâd put them on his quadriceps and attempt to kick against the contraction. Heâd put them on his abdominals â everywhere.â2
Bruceâs co-star in Enter the Dragon, John Saxon, recalled that âBruce also had this strange fishing net hanging from two walls in the back of his house with round pads embedded within it. He told me to step aside, and then he grabbed the side of the net and shook it hard until the net flowed back and forth on its own. He then jumped in the air, kicking and punching the pads as the net waved toward his position. Seeing this firsthand was pretty amazing! Bruce was ahead of his time with training aids and way ahead of his time in how he trained his physicality.â3
As cutting edge as Bruceâs physical training was, it paled in comparison to what Bolo observed him doing to enhance his mental focus and awareness:
One day I went to his house and his wife told me to go upstairs. I couldnât believe what I saw. I dared not enter until he opened the door to call me in. Bruce was sitting behind his desk with a wired ring around his head. My first thought was he must be chi jo sin [mentally ill]. He said, âI am training my nervous system to transmit reactions faster. It is for san sau mang chit [agile body and hands]. Your eye sees someone make a move toward you and your eye nerve directs the brainâs central nervous system and your brainâs nervous system directs your hand or arm or foot to block or kick or strike. This takes time. Too much time. I wanted to train to have it happen faster.
âHow to do this? I tried many experiments. It is very abstract. I finally figured out that a personâs reflexes are fastest when he is sleeping. When he is almost completely relaxed. The more relaxed you are, the faster the reflexes are. When a personâs external and internal systems are relaxed, the nervous transmission is the fastest. When you know this, you can possibly recreate this condition. How? During sparring you are very tense and cannot relax. What to do? You must want to sleep! You must get yourself into a condition that is the equivalent of sleep even when you are sparring or fighting.
âI invented a machine that teaches me to do that . . . I strap this on my head and I have two [cassette] recorders.
