Chapter 15

Corrigan walked into the medical bay, Rojek looking up at him as he entered the room, raising his hands into the air in mock surrender.

“I’ll go back to my cell when we have time,” Rojek replied. “Given what almost happened, it’s just as well I decided to spring myself as soon as I heard the call to battle stations. I figured that probably should include me.”

Carter walked in from the side office, medical kit in hand, and said, “I’d be dead, or worse, if he hadn’t intervened, Commander. I’m far less sure about Collins, but I think you might want to consider accepting Major Rojek’s parole.”

“I’ll think about it,” Corrigan said.

“I’ve already put Collins back into detention,” Rojek said. “Along with all but one member of the boarding party. They’re not going to get out in a hurry. Collins was knocked cold by the sonic rifles they were using, and the others have varying injuries that will incapacitate them for a while. The automed’s already taken a look at them and done what was necessary.”

“What about Malone?” Corrigan asked.

“I gave him the injection myself,” Carter replied, “then locked him in his cabin with his access to the ship’s computer network revoked. It’s highly unlikely that he’ll be able to do anything should the injection fail to work, and the medical sensors will report any change right away.”

“He had the injection less than five minutes after exposure,” Rojek added. “The circumstances couldn’t have been better in terms of recovery. He’s got an excellent chance of walking out of that room with nothing worse than a headache and some bad dreams.”

For a second, the flash of the image danced across Corrigan’s mind again, just out of focus, just out of reach, and he replied, “You’re going to have to take my word, Major, that the long-term effects are far more serious than that.” He looked at the patient on the medical bed, and said, “You suggested that there might be some sort of a cure.”

“I’d like to consult with a human who understands more than I do about what the computer is saying, but apparently there might be a way to edit the image out of the human consciousness with a counter-virus. One that is designed to defeat the image and replace it with something benign.” Looking at the figure, he added, “The brain waves of this man have been radically altered, shaped into something different, borderline non-human. I’ve no idea how that is even possible, but the aliens did it.”

“And we knew about it,” Corrigan said. “I looked at those files. There isn’t anything else there…”

“That’s what I told you,” Rojek interrupted. “Though that doesn’t mean that nothing else exists, and I’d bet my last credit that someone else knows about it, knows every cursed detail.”

“Who might that be?” a stentorian voice barked, as Williams walked into the room, a slight, slender man behind him, wearing a white uniform that had obviously seen better days.

“Someone in Earth’s government, maybe even the President,” said Corrigan.
