Jeannette stood in front of Nate, helping him tape up the plastic suit. She had volunteered to go, but Nate had come up with an excuse: that he couldn’t take care of Joanne if her condition deteriorated any further and Jeannette was not there. With each piece of tape Jeannette put around his ankles and wrists, the anxiety level inside Nate’s mind increased. The air outside was probably safe enough for limited exposure. After all, the girl and her mother had made it to the blood draw facility. The radiation outside would have decayed significantly, but that ash would still be full of all manner of toxins. “So, Nate, you know what you’re looking for, right?” Jeannette asked. They had already gone over it twice, and she had given him a list, but she wanted to be sure. It would really suck for him to go all the way over there and come back only to have forgotten something important. Nate thought Jeannette was acting like he would be venturing a mile undersea, when in reality he was strolling through the ash and dust to the building next door. “I want you to get an electrolyte-heavy IV solution; iodine tablets or liquid; Vancomycin, Cipro, or any other broad spectrum antibiotics; Bactrim or any other antibiotic ointment for burns, that would include silver nitrate; sedatives; painkillers or any analgesic or anti-inflammatory that’s strong; and anything else you think we could use.” Nate repeated the list back to her from rote memory, something he had always had a knack for.

“Yes, and you’re not getting yourself hurt in the process,” Jeannette smiled and kissed him on his exposed cheek. “Are you sure you don’t want me to come along?”

Nate returned the smile, thinking how lucky he was to have been stranded in this place with her. He could have been alone, which would have made everything exponentially worse. “I can handle this; plus you need to look after our guests.” Nate hoped his voice hadn’t sounded like he was suspicious of Denise and Joanne.

With a quick embrace for Jeannette, he walked out the foyer and slid open the glass doors. His first step outside was like stepping out onto the moon; the ground softly crunched under the sole of his shoe. Nate looked down at the small pile of ash he had stepped in; it resembled what is left over after a camp fire has burned itself out. Nate walked a few steps toward the health clinic, he had gowned up inside the plastic suit he had made; he also had a flashlight, figuring it would be dark in the clinic. On his back was the biggest knapsack he had, and in the plastic cinch belt around his waist was the Glock, just in case a looter had camped out in the clinic. He had the flashlight in one hand, and in
