Yedrovo ICBM Complex

‘Yes, I understand Sparavosky,’ Captain Ivensky said into the phone. ‘Keep me informed.

Ivensky hung up the phone and looked around the control room. Kuzmich and Navosky sat at their stations before him, while Sgt. Grunov was at the desk next to him.

Ivensky made a fist and held it to his mouth.

‘What is it?’ Kuzmich asked.

Ivensky said nothing.

‘Captain?’

‘Is it…?’Navosky asked.

‘No, you idiot!’ Ivensky snapped back. ‘Is that how the regiment would contact us?’

‘No, of course not,’ said Navosky.

Captain Ivensky sat silent for a few more moments. ‘That was the base security. The SAM battery reports contacts are closing in on us.’

‘My god!’ said Kuzmich.

‘These are not ICBMs. But incoming Tomahawks.’ Ivensky said. ‘We have a few minutes.’

‘Nuclear?’ asked Sgt. Grunov.

‘Impossible to say.’

‘I suppose we will know in a few minutes, won’t we?’ Sgt. Grunov replied.

‘Can conventional warheads hurt us?’ Kuzmich asked.

Ivensky shook his head. ‘Not down here in the command point, no.’

‘They could destroy the missiles,’ Sgt. Grunov said. ‘In theory.’

Ivensky made a face and said, ‘Da.’

Ivensky looked at a scared Navosky and thought, I need to give the men something to do. ‘Sergeant Grunov. Run system check.’

‘Da, Comrade Major,’ said Sgt. Grunov. ‘Station 1. Check Perimitr connection.’

Navosky looked at the Perimitr display and pressed a button, running a diagnostic test. ‘Functioning normally.’

‘Station 2, check interior cameras.’

Kuzmich switched on the interior cameras and flipped switches through each silo camera. ‘Interior cameras functioning normally.’

‘Check exterior cameras,’ ordered Grunov.

Kuzmich flipped through the exterior cameras, each showing one of the base’s six missile silos. ‘All exterior cameras functioning normally.’

‘Test seismic indicator.’

‘Seismic indicator functioning. No seismic activity.’

‘All systems functioning normally, Comrade Captain.’

‘Very good, Sergeant Grunov,’ said Ivensky. ‘We wait for orders from the regiment, that is what we do. Until then.’ He reached down and buckled his safety belt. ‘Buckle up.’
