For several days the Finisher had cursed his bad luck, or rather the incompetence of the engineers who designed his handheld tracker. It should have been bulletproof, EMP proof, waterproof down to thirty meters, fireproof, snow, and so on. Perhaps they had forgotten sleet or gloom of night that was included in the motto of the postal service.

The damn thing wasn’t working. Whenever he checked Eli’s position, it indicated he hadn’t moved from the hotel. The Finisher had checked every inch of the hotel, leading him to conclude the tracker was faulty. His handheld device should have been working as well as the tracking “coin” itself. So what had gone wrong?

The Finisher’s skills included stalking his victims, and dispatching them in whatever way he deemed was suitable for the occasion. Being idle and patient were not in his repertoire of skills. His mother was right. Idle hands were the devil’s workshop.

He had stashed the Mustang where it couldn’t be easily seen or stolen, and the thought of driving to South Padre Island was sounding better by the minute. Up until now, he was batting a thousand regarding completing his assignments. Eli would be the first to ruin his reputation. Who would’ve thought some geeky computer nerd would ruin his perfect record?

Screw his last assignment.

Screw the government.

Screw everything.

Tomorrow, he’d find a map and drive to South Padre Island.

Unfortunately, the device tracking Eli beeped. The Finisher stared at the red line indicating Eli’s travels.

The Finisher uttered a long and guttural obscenity emanating from deep in his soul. The damn thing was working again.

South Padre Island would have to wait.

The sophisticated device indicated Eli was at a nearby hospital in the Medical Center. In fact, the location analysis revealed his location was fifty feet above ground level, meaning he was on the fifth floor of the hospital, and on the southeast side of the building.

Then, as soon as the device began working, it stopped again. The Finisher found it puzzling as to why the device wasn’t working properly. He took a minute to gather his belongings. The next minute he was out the door and running towards where he had stashed the Mustang.

Getting in the car, he floored the gas and peeled out of the sixth floor of the garage, disregarding people who tried to flag him down. Driving along the deserted streets, he arrived at the hospital, which was Eli’s last known location.

He easily navigated the labyrinth of one-way ramps going up, then backed the car into a parking spot between two massive black Ford trucks. He chose the spot for the sole purpose of hiding the low riding Mustang.

The Finisher exited the car, closing the door as softly as he could. He raced along the pedestrian ramp from the garage to the main building, then stopped to study the evacuation plan for the hospital, specifically where the stairwells were.

Excellent. His search paid off.

He crept up the southeast stairwell to the fifth floor and slowly opened the door, watching for any movement.
