It's not uncommon for companies to hire outside consultants to help them craft their mission statements. The consultant has done this many times before and often brings a perspective and expertise that an in-house employee can't provide – even the CEO.

I worked with the management team of a large gourmet food company to capture their goals for the next five years on paper and then fold all of them together into a mission statement. We had two days and a team of 17 people to accomplish this task – although on the first day, only 16 people showed up.

The CEO said, “Oh, we can start the meeting without Nadia. She is an executive assistant and her presence is not crucial for this meeting.”

The members of the team had taken the Emergenetics questionnaire ahead of time, and I had all their Profiles – and they did, too. The thinking style of the CEO was Analytical and Conceptual, and the rest of the team had various combinations of Analytical, Structural, and Conceptual thinking.

I was going to point out why Nadia's presence was indeed important, but I did not want to directly contradict the CEO right off the bat, so I decided to wait and let the importance of Nadia's absence become apparent on its own.
