American Cooperage Associations
Early American coopers in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries were, much like their European counterparts, a comparatively independent lot. However, with relatively few operating within each town, their ability to form guild-type organizations was limited. These single-man operations were relatively short-lived, with the multi-men cooperages developing somewhat quickly in the mid-1800s. The coopers employed within those companies attempted to form unions, while the owners joined trade associations.
