Chapter Seven

Most people camped as close as possible to the venue. Logan had done the opposite, with the result that his nearest neighbor was two hundred yards away. He’d chosen a boundary site near a stand of tall gum trees, and parked his truck as an additional privacy screen.

As he switched on a couple of LED strips hanging from the two-person tent’s guy ropes, Jen saw a small circle of stones. They were filled with ashes, testifying to a previous campfire and he’d placed a fallen branch in front of it to act as a backrest. “I’ve been here a couple of days helping Lily out,” Logan said, pulling a tarp out of his ute and spreading it over the log as a groundsheet before throwing down a blanket.

“You didn’t stay with her?” Jen blushed, suddenly shy. Would they get naked here…now? What was she doing? One-nighters weren’t her style, too raw, too rash.

“My sister is a wonderful person.” Logan chuckled. “As long as you have a bolt-hole. Sit down,” he invited. “I’ll build a fire.” He reached out and tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear, his blue eyes open and warm. “Would you like a hot chocolate?”

“Love one,” she said. This man understood foreplay. Her decision was rash maybe, but not sordid or desperate or alcohol-driven. And Logan was shy, too. It was in the way he looked at her, wonderingly, a little dazed. Neither of them had expected this rapport. Jen settled against the log, catching a pillow he tossed her to soften her backrest.

Curling her legs under her, she watched Logan move about his campsite, his movements efficient and unhurried as he lit a fire, boiled water on a small primus stove and spooned chocolate into a couple of tin mugs. “Sugar?”

“No. Thank you.” Being here felt easy, right. She looked at the gum trees, admiring the bone white of the eucalyptus’s trunk where the bark had peeled. In her state of sensual awareness she even fancied she could smell the astringent scent of gum leaves. Around the circle of smooth gray rocks, the red earth seemed to release its own glow as the kindling caught and the fire built.

When he carried over two mugs of steaming hot chocolate and sat beside her, she re-settled between his legs and leaned into his chest, still bare under the formal jacket.

“I expected your camp to be some kind of bivouac,” she admitted, throwing the blanket across her bare legs. “But this is downright cosy.”

His laugh was a low vibrating rumble up her spine. “I’m enjoying the luxury of stuff now I don’t have to carry my home on my back anymore.”

They lapsed into silence, a silence that was anticipatory and intensely erotic. They’d talked all evening and now…they didn’t need to talk.

With Logan’s warm body behind her, the fire’s heat heating the rubber of her flip-flops, Jen savored her hot chocolate and watched bursts of sparks leap into the dark like escaping fireflies.

Their time together was so short.
