THE CHERNOBYL CHILDREN’S PROJECT

These charity events were in aid of my passion project at the time, the Chernobyl Children’s Project: a charity that funded medical therapy and exchange holidays for children who were victims of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.

The Chernobyl disaster happened the same year I was born, and I met some of the kids who came to Donegal for respite and health restoration, same age as me, thin and pale as ghosts, many recovering from cancer treatment (or still suffering from it), others terminally ill despite their youth, and they had never even seen the sea. That blew my little mind. I’ll never forget the impact of being in the sea for the first time when they came to my local beach at Rossnowlagh for a day. Looking back, it was a moment that firmly cemented my belief in the power of the sea to heal, to connect across language barriers, across cultures, and the power of play. Just the simple joy of it all and how it transformed, even if only momentarily, their emotional and physical well-being.
