CHAPTER THIRTY ONE

Sula, sat in the hospital bed behind Arba, braiding her hair. Arba hadn’t said much after Sula apologized.

“Baby, I know you are upset and I understand that but Abram was a very attractive man and I was wooed by him. When I was pregnant I discovered, Mercyline was also pregnant and we both went to him in confrontation. He basically laughed it off and told us he would take care of us. He did with money and we both agreed to never tell you who he was. It really wasn’t just about the money so much as it was about my shame, at least for me. I was a good girl and had always followed the rules, telling anyone I had knowingly had an affair with a married politician wasn’t going to happen. I loved you from the first and with his help, I was able to take great care of you and educate myself and you.”Arba’s eyes were closed as her mother spoke and worked magic in her hair.

“Mom, I just don’t understand how you and Mercy could see how close we were as friends and never tell us we were sisters. That blows my mind, mom, you are the most honest woman I know.” Arba intoned.

“It wasn’t easy. We had no idea you girls would end up at the same college and connect like that. By then you were young women and we didn’t see the point really. It stayed on my heart every day, I love you Arba, and you are the best thing God gave me.”

“I love you mom, I need sleep.”

When Arba woke, four hours later, the sun was setting, Terrell was looking out the window. Sula was fast asleep in the chair; she had barely slept for days. As if he sensed her awaking, Terrell walked over to the bed, leaning down to whisper to her.

“Hello beautiful.” He said his eyes full with her beauty. Smiling slightly, she looked up at him.

“Hey, you. Thanks for hanging in there with mom and Mercy and looking for me.”

“I couldn’t have done anything else. I am thankful you are okay, overall. I am sorry you heard about your history on television.” Her eyes watered at his words. Leaning over, he brushed the tears away.

“Yes, but life goes on. There are worse things...” He sounded tender but Arba could hear distance in Terrell’s voice. She knew many men struggled with the kind of attention she just got and the fact they mentioned she was a millionaire probably didn’t help. She could feel the bond weaken.

“Sophia, I am going to the hospital tomorrow to see my daughters. Even if they hate me, they will see me at least one time as their father.”

Sophia’s heart was filled with pain but she knew Abram would do what he said. Oddly, he looked reinvigorated. As if the young women being found alive and finally knowing they were their father took twenty years from him.

“I will not go with you. I just cannot do that.
