Grayson
During the car ride to the meeting location specified by Aidan, whose number had been on the card, Grayson retreated into his mind, recalling the morning spent entwined with Micah. After the phone call, Grayson had spent a few blissful hours with his mateâfated mateâbefore showering together once more, saying goodbye, and leaving him behind to speak with Yesara.
The skinwalker had renewed whatever it was she did to bulwark his sanity before sending him off with a strange weretiger to drive him to their current destination. At the time, Grayson couldn't help but wonder about her connection to the immortal and how she could manage to protect him when no amount of drugs or doctors could do the same.
Their silent journey ended at a nondescript diner on a lonely stretch of road nestled between tall pines. The driver, who hadn't spoken the entire trip, pulled the truck in front of the log-built restaurant, walked around to the passenger side, and jerked the door open with a huff.
"This is it." His voice was bored, and he didn't bother helping Grayson out, standing with his head tilted to the side so it almost rested on his shoulder.
Grayson had tested out his Sight on the trip down without suffering any of the urges to do harm, confirming Yesara had done as promised, so he unfolded his cane and helped himself out of the truck. As soon as he was clear of the door, the driver swung it closed, booked it to the other side without further word, and peeled off.
Reaching into his pocket, he withdrew the phone Yesara had given him and tossed it into the dirty trash can next to the entrance. He and Micah had agreed Grayson's break with Yesaraâand Micahâhad to be clean with no half measures. The phone was meant as a means to remain in contact with her, but it would be used to track him as well.
He folded the cane and slid it into his jacket pocket, then reached for the door. Aidan, the quarterback-looking man Grayson remembered from their first encounter, wended his way through the compact maze of wooden tables, presumably to retrieve Grayson, and Grayson was determined to be honest about everything. Lies could only make things worse.
If they couldn't handle the truth, then this would be over before it began, and he'd head back to Micah, regardless of the potential outcome. Maybe it would be for the best, after all.
When Grayson navigated among mostly empty tables without error, making a beeline for him, surprise crossed Aidanâs face, then turned to shrewd reassessment.
"We're sitting over here." Aidan gestured to a linoleum booth in the back of the restaurant before turning and leading Grayson away.
We turned out to be his mate, Sirus, and the two other shifters, Cade and Pierce, who'd intercepted him and Micah when he killed the warlock.
They scooted close together in the compact booth, leaving Grayson on one side, while they nearly sat on top of each other, facing him.
"I want to start off with an apology for the lives we have taken.
