Chapter 31 – Compromise

____________________

The meeting dragged on with one useless argument after another as most meetings with Sheshna did. Jeena didn’t hate the old elf, but her patience with him had worn out long ago. Her patience with Lord Thalos wasn’t in much better shape.

“I do not care what you think, Sheshna,” Jeena repeated for what seemed like the tenth time. “If you think my bondmate is going to—”

A feeling of confrontation coming down her bond link drove any thoughts of her rebuttal away. She sensed a similar feeling through the emotional link she shared with her brother Ceril.

“No!” Jeena said jumping from the table. She bolted off in the direction of the palace gardens.

She heard High Lord Trenadine shout, “What is it?”

Ignoring the question, Jeena ran between the columns separating the council chamber from the gardens beyond. Wasting no time, she sent a hasty spell out the end of her staff that blew out a side door in the wall of the garden. After her many years growing up in the palace, she knew palace messengers would be waiting outside. As the splintered pieces of wood continued falling to the ground, she passed through the opening to the street beyond. She heard shouts and running feet behind her but paid them no heed. As she’d hoped, two startled guards stood outside holding the reins of a half dozen rearing horses. The guards were attempting to control the frightened animals. Jeena jerked a set of reins from a guard as she leaped into the saddle of the closest steed. With a hard kick of her boot heels, the stallion bolted forward down the alleyway heading to the main street. Shouting encouragement to her running mount, Jeena weaved the warhorse past startled pedestrians. Above the yells of those she passed, she heard the clattering of multiple hoofs behind her.

Emotions of anger coming through the link with her bondmate and the emotional link to her brother told her all she needed to know. The two people she cared most for in the world were locked in battle.

“Lady, no,” Jeena pleaded to the tickle at the back of her mind. “I should have foreseen this. Please stop this before someone is hurt.”

A drop in the reserve she shared with Ceril told Jeena that her brother was preparing a spell. From the amount of Power being removed, she feared it was going to be a big one.

“No,” Jeena shouted digging the heels of her boots hard into the sides of her running mount. Although already at a full gallop, the stallion somehow picked up speed. She turned a corner of the darkened street into the path leading to her home.

Boom!

A flash of light illuminated figures near Jeena’s house. She saw her bondmate being thrown into the air. Her brother was sprawled at the base of the stone wall by her door. A wide-eyed Matisa stood nearby with hands to her mouth. Her sister-in-law Therasia and niece Terika were running toward Ceril.

The light of the explosion ended.
