Chapter 29 – Teleport

____________________

As the blackness disappeared, Calem found himself in a room filled with long metal tables. On top of the tables were boxes made out of a strange material that was neither stone nor wood. Flashing lights of every color of the rainbow adorned many of the boxes. In the corner of the room was a circular, raised dais, also made out of the same strange material. Kneeling on the floor next to the dais was the curly haired boy who’d taken them to see the Oracle. At one of the tables sat a human girl wearing an orange hat with strands of brown hair sticking out. If the girl had been an elf, Calem would’ve guessed her age a little older than his.

“Where are we?” asked Generve who was standing to Calem’s left along with Corby and Ivy.

Looking up, Brachia smiled. “Oh, hi. You didn’t take as long as I thought. I was just triple-checking the teleport pad.”

The brown-haired girl pushed her chair back and stood up. “I told my brother everything was programmed correctly, but he thinks he’s the Creator’s gift to teleporters.” She smiled. “I’m Dren. I’ve been watching the videos from the tele-bots ever since you teleported outside the force field. I imagine you’re pretty confused. The Oracle may be an advanced computer system, but he or she, depending on the illusion being used, has a knack for making things sound more complicated than they are.” She jerked a thumb in the direction of Brachia. “So does my brother.”

Calem glanced around the room again before turning back to the girl. “Is this where we are supposed to find the secret? If so, why do the two of you not tell the high priestess what she needs to know? Why go to all the trouble of having us come here?”

The human girl laughed.

Calem thought she had a nice laugh. She is nice looking for a human.

“No, it’s not here,” said Dren. “The only secrets in this place are that ones I keep from my brother. The Oracle has only told us part of the algorithm. Uh...you probably don’t know what an algorithm is, do you?”

Four elves shook their heads at once.

The human girl laughed again. “I didn’t think so. I suppose you could think of it as a prophecy that may or may not happen. Anyway, the secret, whatever it is, is located in the past on Portalis’s second continent. The Oracle has given us the location and a time, but we have no idea what you’ll find when you get there.”

“The second continent?” said Generve. “Do you mean where Queen Emerald’s dwarves came from? I went to Silverton with my grandfather last month when he met with some of the queen’s magic users. They came from a place called Old Drepdenor. According to the dwarf mages, they came through a time-bubble from a hundred thousand years in the past. Once they got to our time, they used ships to cross the ocean to our continent of Slyvrastra.
