In front of her apartment, two hours later, at 1am, she was slumped against the ute’s door. She was so numb, Spike’s voice didn’t even bring a reaction.

“Chloe, you’re home. Get out.”

She looked up at him. Her eye was swelling shut, she felt like her lips and cheek wur the size of a red-hot grapefruit.

“Ya remember what we agreed on.”

She nodded.

“Ya call in sick fa at least several days. Ya don’t go out of the house.”

She nodded.

“Somebody finds out you’re hurt, ya tell ‘em ya wur cliff diving, alone, and ya hit the rocks.”

She nodded.

“Now get out, ya little gobber.”

She grabbed the door handle. It hurt to move. She carefully stepped down out of the cab, with a wince that made her catch her breath.

“Say it.”

“I’m a mutt.”

“Say it again.”

“I’m a mutt.”

He stared at her hard, menacing.

“Ya know I can find ya anytime.”

She nodded.

“And I know ya family.”

She nodded.

“If ya Dad finds out about this, I’m goin’ to kill him and feed him to the sharks. Understand?”

She nodded.

“Now get ya nasty tail away from my ute.”

She turned to leave.

“Chloe, look at me.”

She turned, wincing again.

“I had a real nice time. We’re gonna have ta do this again, soon.”

He started laughing, slammed the door, and his ute sped away, spinning out, pelting her with gravel. She didn’t care. What’s a little gravel once you’re already dead? She limped toward the door, everything hurting, beach towel dragging the ground, her bare foot lower than the one dragging along the broken thong. She didn’t care.

“Hey, Joe. How ya doin’, mate?”

“I’m alright, Mia. How’re you?”

“I was just checkin’ to see how last night went.”

“Last night?”

“Yeah, fish and chips with Becky and Chloe?”

“Oh. That. Didn’t Chloe tell ya? She ditched us. Left the beach early, with Spike. I tried to stop her, Mia, but she was actin’ like a stupid little girl and wasn’t nothing I could do to slow her down.”

“You and Becky went out to dinner by yourselves?”

“Nah. The thing with Chloe took the wind out of my sails. We agreed to do a raincheck and set up another night when Chloe could join us.”

“She left with Spike?”

“I’m sorry, Mia. Like I said, I couldn’t talk her out of it. It was foul, seeing the two of them go off together.”

“Joe, I can’t reach her.”

“What? You haven’t seen her? I was assuming you would have gotten a full report by now.”

“Joe, I gotta go. I’ll call ya after I’ve had a chance to talk to Chloe.”
