My eyes were sticky with dried blood and my head spinning as I swam back up into consciousness. It took me a moment to get my bearings, to clear my mind enough to think. Without moving, I took stock of my surroundings. I was now laying on the floor, a folded parka placed beneath my aching head. The images and excessive amounts of otherworldly knowledge I’d absorbed from the ancient lifeform had receded, but I could still feel it as a pressure just behind my closed eyes. I had no idea how this new layer of perception would continue to affect me, but for now, I was grateful it hadn’t destroyed my mind or changed me in any more noticeable ways. At least as far as I could tell. I was going to be alright – for now. Glancing around, I tried to determine what was going on, how long I’d been unconscious.

It must not have been for very long. I found that I now lay behind the collection of storage tanks we’d seen in the first chamber and realized Tunuhun must have carried me here after I’d passed out. With a great amount of cautious optimism, I sat up, raising my hands to my head to probe my skull with gentle fingers. There seemed to be no additional bumps or other contusions besides the ones I’d sustained during the fall last night, so perhaps I was as fit as I was going to be for the time being. The spare medical kit rested beside me and a wad of soiled antiseptic wipes told me that Tunuhun had cleaned the blood from my face and hands while I was out. The parka I’d been lying on was his and I found him sitting cross-legged just behind me, his broad back propped against the wall as he worked.

We were hidden from view of the hallway in this corner of the room, and I met his eyes with a look of gratitude I knew he’d be able to fathom just from my expression alone. He nodded to me before returning to what he’d been doing, and as I studied the objects he now held, my knowledge of basic chemistry came back to me in a rush.

Stripped to the waist, muscles gleaming in the light of the blackout torches, he was emptying the spare ammo cartridges onto a slip of folded paper. Other items from our limited supplies were placed on the floor around him and from their composition, I could tell he was fashioning an incendiary device of some sort. His spear was set across his knees at an angle and he’d already built a serviceable delivery system around the shaft near the tip. It was apparent he was making a weapon that could explode upon impact, using the emergency flares, gun powder, fuses, flashlight batteries, and other chemicals from our medical supplies. His features were shadowed and grim, the tracings of many scars from old injuries that he’d sustained during past hunts standing out across his rock-hard body.
