Shay stowed the grimoire in a cubby behind the counter at The Wandering Witch. She’d already gathered every amethyst in the store—from polished stones to pendants—and wound up with thirty-six.

Only two hundred and sixty-four to go.

She stepped out into the mall, bobbing and weaving through the crowd, searching for stores that might prove helpful in supplying all the ingredients necessary to break the ever-after spell. She spied the flower shop ahead and decided to check on Simone and Noah. Without supervision, they might just be making out again—all thoughts of forget-me-nots…forgotten.

She was about to enter when heated voices from the back of the small store made her pause.

“So you’re not happy I sold another house, is that it?” Simone stepped into view near a cooler filled with flowers. Her jaw was tight with anger.

“Of course I’m happy you sold a house.” Noah sounded frustrated, as though he’d said this same thing before.

“You don’t sound happy.” Simone folded her arms.

“I keep telling you, it’s not about the house.” Simone opened her mouth to speak, but Noah kept talking. “It’s not about you being successful, either. Do you really think I’m the kind of guy who feels threatened by their girlfriend’s success?”

“Not until now.” Simone jutted her chin.

“I can’t talk to you when you’re like this.” Noah yanked the cooler door open and began rooting around the bins of flowers.

“They’ve been at it for a while.”

Shay spun to see Avery in the accessory shop next door. She held a nail file in one hand and a bejeweled barrette in the other. The Tom-inspired Chatty Catty watched from his perch on a shelf.

“What are you doing?” Shay walked over to her.

Avery squinted at the barrette and dug the tip of the nail file into one of its gems. She plucked out the tiny stone and held it up to the light, revealing its deep purple hue.

“Collecting amethysts.” She wore a satisfied grin as she dropped the gemstone into a small dish, already filled with a few dozen more. “The grimoire didn’t specify a minimum size, did it?”

“It did not.” Shay smiled at her best friend’s ingenuity. “What would I do without you?”

“Lucky for you, you’ll never have to find out.” Avery dropped another amethyst into the dish. “Between the earrings, bracelets, necklaces, and barrettes, we should have all we need right here in this store.”

“Incredible.” Shay scanned the shelves, searching for another nail file.

“If you don’t want to keep going out, just say so.” Noah’s hurt, angry words drifted in from the shop next door.

Shay glanced up, wondering if she should intervene. “What is going on with those two?”

“Hormones.” Avery picked up another barrette. “Can’t you feel them? My whole body feels like an exposed nerve—in both good and bad ways.” She grinned and plucked loose an amethyst. “Although all their making out seemed like a much better use of them.”

Shay did feel different—with a jumble of feelings she couldn’t untangle. That must be why she and Finn had fought.

But was it the only reason?

Heightened emotions didn’t mean the reasons behind them weren’t true.
