Chapter Twelve
Pixie Poe was quite possibly the worst company an already grumpy person could ask for. She spoke very little, and every word out of her mouth felt condescending or vaguely insulting. Phillip hadnât liked her, either. Iâd finally banished him outside so heâd quit growling at her. His hold on humanity seemed to be growing weaker, and that put my grumpy mood right over the edge into the pissed-off range.
Pissed was better than devastated.
âSo. Any idea why someone is killing off your pack?â I was aggravated enough at her coolness that taking out my irritation through annoying questions seemed like a good idea.
She looked at me, dour frown still affixed to her face, and fiddled with the ring on her hand. It was too big for her petite fingers. It looked like a manâs class ring and seemed vaguely familiar. Probably from a local collegeâmaybe from Stephen. How very high school of him. I wasnât jealous. I wasnât.
Dammit.
âPerhaps someone does not like weres,â she said finally.
âMaybe.â I glanced at my kitchen. âBut that doesnât explain killing Chris Heinlein. He was a witch, not a werewolf.â One whoâd been on a list of witches who could be providing this killer with a spell to wipe his scent from crime scenes, but I wasnât sure if she knew that. Or how it was relevant.
âThat death could be unrelated to the others. He may have died for another reason. Greed, revenge, the normal things. He could have been killed by another witch, jealous of his power.â
âHmph,â I said, âI donât think a witch could have done that to his face.â
She stared at me. I realized what I said too late. Crap. How was I supposed to explain how Iâd seen his face?
âWitches can do many things. You are young and weak. You do not know of these things.â Even while insulting me, her accent made her sound sultry. How very irritating. However, I was relieved she hadnât picked up on my mistake. She must have assumed Stephen went over the details with me. Or that Iâd seen the body before it had been removed.
âYeah, well, pretty damn big coincidence he was killed the same way as the others, then.â What the hell. I figured might as well see what I could learn if she assumed I already knew the details.
âNot as big a coincidence as you may think,â she said, lifting her chin up to look me in the eye. âThere are many things in this world capable of suchâ¦violence.â
I looked down. Something about her eyes was unsettling. Sheâd witnessed horrors to confirm this worldview of hers, and the knowing look Iâd seen there had a touch of crazy to go along with it. I wondered what things sheâd seen to give her that look. She gave the impression of someone whoâd lived a long time and witnessed terrible things. Weres are long-lived compared to humans, but not long-lived enough to justify the look in her eyes. Besides, she appeared twenty-two at the oldest.
