Chapter Twenty-One

It was another busy Saturday night at The Brewery, Whispering Willows’s one and only bar. Emerson and I sat at a hightop table while trays zoomed around us, carrying shots that people reached out and grabbed. Fairy lights were strung around the whitewashed brick walls, giving off a soft glow. We sat near the hearth, a roaring fire crackling inside, a cauldron brewing some new potion that floated into the air. Orange and cinnamon mingled together, and I wondered what potion the owner was cooking up.

“Okay.” Emerson took a drink from her skull-shaped cup. “What is going on with you and Preston? It’s been like forever since we talked, and I still don’t see a ring on that finger.”

I glanced down at my bare hand, frowning. A ring? I just wanted a kiss. I wasn’t even thinking about a ring. Though now that she mentioned it, the thought of being Preston’s wife sent skitters down my arms.

“You’re getting ahead of yourself.” I took a sip of my own drink from a witch’s hat. The fruity mixture of pomegranate and blueberry exploded on my tongue. “I’m still reeling from finding out I have a father, one who actually wants to be in my life and who has this entire history with my mother I never knew about.”

Emerson made an eesh face. “Yeah, um, how’s that going?”

“Good, actually. He’s completely normal. No lies.” I thought about my past relationship with the mayor and how he’d lied to me our entire courtship, which ultimately was what caused its demise. “No drama.” I thought about Isaac and how much trouble he’d caused when he first came into our lives. “He’s just this nice, normal man. It’s really refreshing.”

Emerson raised her glass. “To nice, normal men.”

We clinked glasses.

“So, speaking of nice, normal men . . .” Emerson moved her hands as if to prompt me to speak.

I groaned into my drink. “I don’t know what’s going on with me and Preston. He’s planned all these wonderful, beautiful dates for me, and every single one has been ruined by something. Demons, my dad, Helen and Remy. And Preston’s so busy teaching and coaching, and I’m so busy running a business and raising a daughter, we can’t seem to find time to see each other.”

Emerson pointed a long, manicured nail at me. “You need to step up your game.”

I brought a hand to my chest. “Mwah?”

“Yes, mwah.” She shook her head, her perfect blonde waves barely moving with the motion. “No more of these little afternoon dates. Find someone to spend the night with Remy, book a hotel, and you give Preston the best night of his life.”

My entire body lit up at that. At the thought of having Preston in a hotel room, all to myself. Absolutely no distractions. Just him and me . . . and . . . warmth pooled between my legs.

“Girl, you need an ice bucket right now.” Emerson smirked. “Whew, I want whatever you’re planning.”

“I’m not planning anything,” I said, cheeks flushing, but even as I said it, I thought about where Preston and I could go.
