Holding Benny afloat while the boy kicked vigorously with his feet, the memory of Jacinth’s touch, her fingers strong and soothing, remained. Wanting her was becoming a continual ache in his gut, the need to take her into his arms a growing compulsion. Odd that she was so afraid of the water, since it couldn’t actually hurt her. She’d stayed well back from the pool, he remembered, when the serviceman came to clean the pool earlier that week, but he’d thought she was just staying out of the man’s way. Looking back, in fact, he couldn’t remember once in the several times they’d been in the back yard playing with the kids that Jacinth had come within ten feet of the swimming pool.

He set Benny to practicing his kicks from the side of the pool, and held out his arms for Molly. Glancing over at Jacinth, he almost laughed to see her sprawled on her stomach in the hammock, devouring a home and garden magazine. It just seemed so... well, so normal. June-and-Ward-Cleaver kind of normal. He shook his head, silently laughing at the thought. Normal? There was nothing remotely normal about having a genie in his life, much less in his backyard reading a ladies’ magazine.

“Douglas!” Jacinth looked up just then, her brown eyes glowing. “It says here there’s something called a Princess of Wales rose. Could we get one?”

“One?” One what? Rose?

“A rose bush. We could plant it under Molly’s window.”

Molly looked up at him hopefully. “Please, Daddy? I want roses.”

He tapped her nose. “You always want any flower, pumpkin.”

“But this one is special,” Jacinth insisted. “It was officially named in honor of Princess Diana. It says here it’s ivory touched with pink. And 15% of the proceeds go to her memorial fund, to help people in need.”

Douglas could no more resist the pleading in her eyes than the sun could resist rising.

“Okay, turn the page down, and I’ll order it,” he said.

The smile she turned on him was its own reward, but he noted her eyes were brimming with unshed tears.

“Thank you. It means a lot to me. I thought Diana was wonderful. When she was killed I could hardly believe it.”

“You couldn’t...” he glanced down at Molly. “There wasn’t, uh... any way she could have been saved?”

Jacinth shook her head, sorrow in her dark eyes. “No interference, Douglas.”

“Interference in what?” Benny piped up.

Douglas rolled his eyes.

“We’ll continue this conversation later,” he told Jacinth.
