Chapter Six
HE WALKED ALONG THE street his head hung low. The crowbar swung gently beside him. He tried to keep it some-what covered, he didn't want to scare anyone. As he put some distance between him and the previous suburb, he found himself walking on what he could only assume was a highway.
It was six lanes across and completely abandoned. He couldnât see any cars in either direction, but he'd seen enough movies and played enough games to know that if he kept to the highway, kept walking along its length, he would undoubtedly eventually come across a roadblock. He would reach a place where the traffic was so jammed, and no-one could escape and all they could do was abandon their cars. Maybe if he could find the roadblock, he could find a car that did still have the keys inside. It was always those abandoned car situations where the keys were left behind. Maybe then he could turn around and go back the other way. With a car, once he found the toilet paper, he could get home a lot quicker too. It was smart.
He looked left. He looked right. For as far as he could see, there was no roadblock. So, he decided to toss a coin. He shoved his hands into his pockets and then remembered, he didn't have any coins. Normally, he just rolled a D20[iv] for these kinds of life or death decisions, but he stupidly didnât think to bring one with him.
What was he going to do? He scratched his head. He closed his eyes and spun around on the spot. He spun faster and faster until he was almost ready to fall over. And then he slowed himself down, wobbling from side to side, reaching out to steady himself even though there was nothing in reach. Until finally, he stopped. He opened his eyes and started walking forward.
When he saw the first car, he thought it was a mirage. He had been walking for so long. At least another hour. But he knew once he saw that first car, he was at the back of the roadblock. If he kept walking, soon, very soon, he would find all the abandoned cars. He reached the car and glanced inside as he walked past.
He froze. There was someone in there. He slowly turned and looked through the window. In the back seat, was a child.
Thoughts ran through his head. Mum and Dad would tell him to keep going, focus on the mission. But Sarah, she would tell him to stop and look after the kid. She was always trying to look after strays. He tried to step forward, away from the car, but couldn't. If he did, Sarah would be so mad at him.
"Damn it," he said. He didn't have time for this but, he couldn't just leave a kid in an abandoned car. He looked down the road and couldnât see the roadblock yet. He didnât know how far he would have to go.
