Goal Setting Should Aim to Improve Confidence

Employment underdogs at times lack the confidence to be motivated by goals that are reachable but tough to achieve. So, in the first few months of their employment, it’s ultimately wiser to focus goal setting on boosting confidence and not outcomes (productivity, sales, and so on).

If, for example, setting a lower target (than needed or eventually expected) will build confidence and motivation, then that’s the right move. Additionally, breaking down larger goals in order to show that some areas are coming along well even though the larger target has not yet been achieved is also important in order to boost self-confidence. Once self-confidence has improved, goal setting can get back to focus-ing on improving outcomes.
