FEROCIOUS WARRIORS

Genghis Khan was born around 1162.18 He created the Mongol Empire, which was one of the largest empires in the world. He organized a large army and was feared for his merciless brutality. Khan and his Mongol army destroyed city after city if they opposed him. They swept through fortifications slaughtering everything in sight. Even small domestic animals were killed. Any survivors were marched in front of the army as shields as they attacked the next fortification.

Khan would send out an order for a city to surrender or die. If they did not surrender he would massacre the entire populace. Author Steven Pinker notes in his book, The Better Angels of Our Nature,19 that Khan may have wiped out as many as 40 million people. Even a small Mongol occupying force could subdue a much larger populace as people feared that if they overpowered the smaller Mongol army a larger one would exact retribution.

For all his ruthless methods, goods, information, medicine, and technology traveled freely under Khan’s rule. He abolished torture and class systems. He promoted soldiers based on their ability rather than social class. While the world feared Khan, his men were loyal to him.

In the fourteenth century, the Mings overthrew the Mongol-led Yuan dynasty. To solidify their new Ming dynasty, they rounded up all Mongol males. Any who were taller than a wagon wheel were killed immediately. Any male children shorter than a wagon wheel were castrated and girls were taken as concubines. The policy was therefore to kill the men, castrate the boys, and take the women.20 Ruthless brutality and swift action has developed some of the greatest military commanders throughout history.

Around 335 BCE, Alexander the Great became ruler of Macedonia at twenty years of age.21 Taking advantage of his young age and recent crowning, the citizens of Thebes revolted. They massacred the occupants of a Macedonian garrison and declared their independence.

Alexander was yet to be called great. He quickly marched into Thebes and punished the insurgents mercilessly. His forces burned the city and any survivors were sold as slaves. He carried out this attack before the citizens realized what had happened. His swift and brutal action set the stage for developing one of the largest empires in history.

Beyond individual fighters renowned for their brutality as the key to their success, the most successful martial arts have a fierce ruthlessness at the center of their effectiveness as well. Specifically, hand-to-hand combat arts are designed not to break boards but people.
