Later, after Eliza is sleeping, I go to my study. The first few books Eliza ordered are sitting on my desk. I run my finger over the spines.

She knows me.

It’s been a long time since someone wanted to know me, since someone even tried. Danica and Beau are the only people in the world who even come close.

I groan. There are people I know. Things I can do.

I pick up my phone and dial the number. It rings twice and then someone answers, “Allo?”

“I need to speak to Sergei,” I say. I’ve made this call only twice before, but never for this particular reason.

“Who’s calling?” The voice on the other end asks, thick with an Eastern Bloc accent.

“Macon Sands,” I reply. “He knows me. We’ve worked together before.”

“Holt on,” he says. The line goes quiet.

A minute or so later the line livens. I hear another voice, this one familiar, tinged with German. “Mister Sands, it’s been a long time. To what do I owe da pleasure?’

“I have a project,” I tell him. “Different than what we’ve done before.”

“Oh?”

I tell Sergei what I have in mind. We settle on a figure – it’s expensive, but not as much as I thought it might be – and then we discuss logistics. I get his bank account and routing details. He agrees to take care of the rest.

“It vill take a few weeks to get everyding done. Ve’ll make contact, and make sure he understands that only you can fix zings. And den we’ll take da rest from dere.”

And so it begins.

Alex fucked with Eliza one too many times. And now it’s gonna cost him – everything.
