A winemaker to watch, Edouard Labruyère has been quietly making inroads into some of the most closed-off regions in France. His family started in Moulin-à-Vent, and now run estates in Pomerol, Burgundy and Champagne. This one, and Chateau Rouget in Pomerol, have been run entirely organically since Edouard took over, with a large slice of biodynamic practices. In 2016 he had to treat to avoid losing the entire harvest, but it is back to organics today. The 2014 vintage had hail problems (so small volumes); it is one of the earlier drinking vintages from this property. Expect fresh but intense redcurrant and raspberry fruit, liquorice root, smoky violets, fine tannins, with a focus on teasing out the fruit essence. The sweetness of the fruit would work great with a goat’s cheese salad.
